According to reports, the energy sector played a significant role in the signing of several agreements for cooperation between the two sides during a meeting between Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of the State Administration Council and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on March 4.
Russia’s Rossiya 24 television reported that the two sides signed an agreement on principles to cooperate on building a small nuclear power plant in Myanmar.
Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy corporation Rosatom has announced that it will implement a nuclear power plant project in Myanmar that will generate 110 megawatts of electricity, with the potential to expand to 330 megawatts, under an intergovernmental agreement.
In addition, after the talks, President Putin said that the two countries are jointly exploring opportunities for renewable energy. Rosatom is also planning to build wind power plants in Myanmar with a capacity of 172 megawatts and 200 megawatts, respectively. Rosatom and the Myanmar government have signed a memorandum of understanding to begin feasibility studies for these projects.
During the talks, Putin noted the development of progressive relations between the two states, pointing out that trade turnover between the countries has increased by 40 percent to about US$2 billion. He also thanked the Chairman of SAC for organising Russia’s cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). #Chairman of SAC #Vladimir Putin #small nuclear plant #110 megawatts #mtnewsupdate
