The Arakan Army (AA) released two of the three Bangladeshi cargo ships it had seized in the past few days on January 20, Bangladesh-based media reported.
The AA released two of the three cargo ships after four days of seizing them, leaving two of them docked at the Teknaf Port. However, Bangladesh-based media reported that the AA still detains one of the cargo ships.
A Teknaf port official, Baduda, said that the AA group seized three cargo ships heading from Myanmar to Teknaf port on January 16. The AA team conducted searches along the Naaf River, which is the border between Rakhine State and Bangladesh.
Bangladeshi news reported that two of the seized ships returned to port on the morning of January 20. Three cargo ships were seized while returning to a Bangladeshi port carrying various goods, including coffee, betel nuts, and fruits.
One cargo ship was still being detained and is expected to be released soon, the source said. “The Rakhine armed group has detained three cargo ships returning to the port of Teknaf,” said Jasin Uddin Chowdhury, a port authority in Teknaf. “Two of the three ships have been released. However, one is still being detained.”
The three cargo ships carry more than 50,000 bags worth over 400 million Takas in Bangladeshi currency, and they are reportedly goods ordered by Bangladeshi traders.
