ASEAN is reportedly set to send a special representative from the ASEAN Chairman to Myanmar to address the ongoing terrorist attacks occurring in the country.
The ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting occurred on Malaysia’s Langkawi Island, where the Myanmar issue was addressed. Reports indicate that Tan Sri Othman, a Malaysian diplomat overseeing the ASEAN rotating chairmanship, has been designated the ASEAN chairperson’s special representative for Myanmar.
A delegation headed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar participated in the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting hosted by Malaysia.
Othman, the incoming ASEAN Special Representative, previously served as the secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia. He will be the 5th Special Representative of the ASEAN rotating chairman for Myanmar since 2021.
Malaysia’s foreign minister stated that during the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ meeting, the Myanmar delegation persisted in discussing the plan to conduct elections for the transition to a civilian government.
