The Government of India today handed over 2,200 metric tonnes of rice as humanitarian assistance to Myanmar to the Yangon Region Government and officials.
Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Abhay Thakur handed over 2,200 metric tonnes of Indian white rice to benefit 140,000 Myanmar people in need at the Yangon Port today. The ceremony was attended by Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein, officials from the Myanmar Red Cross Society and civil society organizations.
The Indian government has sent the rice to Myanmar via Chennai Port. The Indian Embassy said that the humanitarian assistance to Myanmar is in line with the Look East Policy and Neighbourhood First Policy of the Government of India. The 2,200 tonnes of rice will help children, women, youth, the elderly and the disabled.
The Indian government has previously provided assistance to Myanmar in its development projects and disaster response efforts. Last September, it sent 53 tonnes of humanitarian assistance and disaster response assistance to the people of Myanmar affected by Cyclone Raghi.
