The Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture has initiated the process of inscribing Myanmar Traditional New Year Thingyan Festival on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Nomination File for Myanmar Traditional New Year Thingyan Festival was submitted to the UNESCO Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage on 24 March 2023.
The nomination file for Myanmar Traditional New Year Festival was officially decided on 5 December at the (19th) Intangible Cultural Heritage Conference held in Asuncion, Paraguay, from 2 to 7 December 2024. Now, the “Myanmar Traditional New Year Thingyan Festival” submitted by Myanmar has been officially included in the World Intangible Cultural Heritage List for the first time in Myanmar.
Such inclusion is due to the joint efforts of the Myanmar Cultural Heritage Preservation Association, ethnic literature and cultural associations in various states and regions of Myanmar, civil society organizations, and all the people.
By including the “Myanmar Traditional New Year Thingyan Festival” in the World Intangible Cultural Heritage List, can receive profits of the “Myanmar Traditional New Year Thingyan Festival” will be better known to the world, passed on to new generations, increased public awareness of the preservation and celebration of Thingyan, and providing good experiences and opportunities for other intangible cultural heritages of Myanmar to be included in the World Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
