The Myanmar Embassy in Thailand announced on November 18 that children born to Myanmar parents in Thailand can now register their births.
The statement states that under Section (10) of the Myanmar Citizenship Law of 1982, children born to Myanmar parents in Thailand can register their birth within one year from the date of birth by filling out forms at the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok or the Myanmar Consulate – General in Chiang Mai and having the parents or guardians come in person to register.
To register, the parent or guardian must come in person to the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok or the Myanmar Consulate-General in Chiang Mai within one year from the date of birth, along with a copy of the birth certificate (English translation). Children born abroad can be registered by filling out the birth certificate (Form Naing-8) attached (A).
For such registration, copies of both parents’ Myanmar passports, copies of their citizen cards, and copies of both parents’ applications and declarations must be submitted together. Consular officers will scrutinize the documents in accordance with the procedures and submit them to the relevant ministry for approval. They will also register the birth of a citizen born outside the country and add the parents’ names to the citizenship certificate.
If children born in Thailand to Myanmar parents need to continue living in Thailand after the birth is registered, they can apply for a Myanmar passport (birth extension) with the attached documents (B) at the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok and the Myanmar Consulate-General in Chiang Mai.
Regarding the application for a Myanmar passport (birth certificate), the Myanmar Embassy and the Myanmar Consulate General must submit it to the Myanmar Passport Issuing Authority and obtain approval, so it is estimated that it may take about (4) months.
