The Department of Archeology and National Museums has informed that Myanmar’s traditional Ata Thingyan festival has been included in UNESCO’s preliminary list as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The 19th World Intangible Cultural Heritage Conference, which will be held in Asuncion, Paraguay from December 2nd to 7th, 2024, will make an official decision on the proposal of Myanmar’s traditional New Year Thingyan festival submitted by Myanmar.

A senior official from the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture also announced on social media that “Myanmar’s traditional Ata Thingyan is the first elemental culture for Myanmar to be included in the UNESCO preliminary list, so it is almost certain that it will become the world’s elemental culture.”

It was also found on the UNESCO website that among the submitted proposals, which will be designated as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage in UNESCO’s preliminary decision, is the Burmese New Year and Thingyan festival.

In March 2023, Myanmar’s traditional New Year’s Thingyan Festival was submitted to UNESCO for recognition as a world elemental culture, and Thailand’s Thingyan Festival, which is called Mahason Karan, has already been recognized by UNESCO. So, last year in Thailand, the Maha Song Karan festival was celebrated for five days from April 11 to 15.
