As the Myanmar Port Authority had previously warned that the Yangon River would experience an extraordinary rise in tide between October 16 and 21, this morning some townships in Yangon witnessed significant flooding. Streets in the neighborhood were submerged up to knee level, and areas adjacent to the Ngamoeyeik Creek were inundated until the water level of the creek matched that of the road.
In 2014 and 2015, the floodwaters reached heights of up to 22 feet above the baseline water level, but today it was announced that the maximum rise would be only 21 feet.
Last October 18th, when the tide rose, the apartment was flooded, and I had to clean it extensively. This time, it isn’t too much of a problem because everything that could be damaged has been stored in advance. However, it is still affected by the river water and stream water. “The room has to be rewashed due to the sewer water,” said a resident of Tamwe Township.
When the tide rose last September, flooding also occurred in areas near the mouth of the sea, including Tamwe, Kyauk Myaung, Pazundaung Creek, Ngamoeyeik Creek, and the Yangon River.
