Mandalay to celebrate its grand Thadingyut Festival with ten thousand oil lamps

On the southern side of Mandalay moat, 26th Street, between 66th and 73rd Streets, will host Mandalay’s grand Thadingyut Festival. The festival will feature the lighting of 10,000 oil lamps, religious offerings at pagodas, entertainment by famous singers, and traditional food-offering pavilions.

According to U Tin Htun Oo, head of the Public Relations and Information Department of the Mandalay City Development Committee (MCDC), the festival will be officially celebrated on Thadingyut Full Moon Day, 17 October. However, the streets will be lit up from the evening of 16 October, the day before the full moon.

“A main archway will be located on 66th Street and another at 73rd Street along 26th Street. 26th Street will be lit up with decorative lights. The opening ceremony will begin at 6 pm with a beautiful fireworks display. An offering of ten thousand oil lamps will be lit in homage at the replica of the Bagan Shwezigon Pagoda at 26th Street and 66th Street.” he said.

The MCDC band and renowned national vocalists will perform in front of the MCDC office as part of the entertainment programme. The festival will also include a fair with market stalls. From 6 pm to 10 pm, 12 pavilions will offer food.
