South Korea’s president has announced that 23 million US dollars will be provided as humanitarian aid to Myanmar this year.
South Korean President Yoon Sae-yeol participated in a closed-door discussion on aid to Myanmar during the East Asia Summit, South Korea’s presidential office said.
Discussions and cooperation on the Myanmar issue are likely to help with humanitarian aid needs due to the fighting that has erupted since Myanmar became a political power struggle in 2021.
The South Korean government’s humanitarian assistance to Myanmar this year has increased four times compared to 2023.The South Korean government has provided 5.6 million US dollars in humanitarian aid to Myanmar in 2022 and 5.8 million US dollars in 2023.
Leaders from 18 countries attended the East Asia Summit, including leaders from ASEAN member countries, as well as Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, South Korea and the United States. The United Nations has reported that at least 3 million people have been displaced due to the ongoing fighting and natural disasters in Myanmar.
