On Monday, Thai Prime Minister Pei Tong Shinawatra said that ASEAN must play a key role in ending the conflict in Myanmar. ASEAN is set to hold a summit of leaders from 10 member countries this week.
“ASEAN must play an important role in bringing peace back to Myanmar as soon as possible,” Paetongtarn told an event in Bangkok.
She said Thailand will work with Malaysia, next year’s ASEAN chair, to use diplomatic means to resolve the conflict. This underlines what may be a renewed effort by the bloc to push for a resolution as its leaders gather for an annual summit on Wednesday.
