Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, the former Mandalay Region Chief Minister who was released yesterday after being imprisoned for many years for vote fraud and corruption, died of leukemia in the intensive care unit of Mandalay Hospital on October 7 at around 3:00 a.m today.
Former Mandalay Region Chief Minister NLD Deputy Chairman Dr. Zaw Myint Maung was transferred from Mandalay Obo Prison to Mandalay Hospital due to his deteriorating health.
“The morning passed away. His wife Dr. Daw Yu Yu May confirmed it. As for the funeral, we don’t yet know how to do it,” a person close to the matter told MT News.
Dr. Zaw Myint Maung was 73 years old when he died.
It is reported that Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, who is suffering from leukemia, was transferred to Mandalay General Hospital on June 25 from where he received treatment at the prison hospital in Mandalay Obo Prison. Due to this disease, he had to go to Thailand for treatment and was constantly taking cancer drugs. After February 1, 2021, he was prosecuted in at least 10 cases, including Article 130 (a) of the Penal Code related to election matters under the anti-corruption law section, natural disaster management law section, and sentenced to 29 years in prison. Yesterday, on October 6, Mandalay Obo Prison released all of these sentences.
