Thai Foreign Ministry Director General Nikorndej Plangoon stated in an interview with VOAthai that the Thai government is working to resolve the Myanmar issue for three reasons.

The first of the three points is that Thailand shares a 2,400-kilometer border with Myanmar, meaning the ongoing conflict in Myanmar directly affects Thailand. The second point is that it is a member of ASEAN, and the third point pertains to its status within the international community, stated the Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand.

He stated, “We must engage in dialogue with Myanmar. As a neighbouring country, Myanmar’s peace is interconnected with Thailand’s. Due to the ongoing conflict in Myanmar, Burmese citizens are crossing the border into Thailand,” he said.

In addition, he stated, “Thailand has not concealed its discussions with all relevant organizations concerning the Myanmar issue. Either the civilian government or the military government must negotiate. We want to see peace in Myanmar. Thailand is prepared to mediate and discuss the Myanmar issue. However, if there is a legal request from the Myanmar side, we will intervene,” he added.

Additionally, he mentioned that since Thailand is a friend of the organizations involved in the Myanmar issue, it would be easier to mediate and negotiate. China also stated that the Thai government’s discussions regarding the Myanmar issue can be articulated, and the US government can engage with the Thai government through the US embassy in Thailand to address the Myanmar issue.

Concerning the Myanmar issue, the Thai government has previously voiced concerns about the negotiations with the SAC. The Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand stated that some ASEAN member countries, including Indonesia, have criticized this action.
