A delegation from Myanmar, led by Union Minister for Electric Power U Nyan Tun, attended the 7th Russian Energy Week International Forum in Moscow from September 26 to 28.
On September 26, the minister participated in a discussion titled “Low-Carbon Energy: The Foundation of a Sustainable Future,” where he presented Myanmar’s strategy for developing electricity generation from low-carbon renewable sources, including hydro, wind, and solar power, integrated with the National Grid. Feasibility studies have identified 28 onshore and two offshore potential hydro and wind energy sites. A system that combines wind and solar energy is also being developed to ensure a stable and reliable long-term electricity supply. This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change by the UNFCCC resolution, which aims to decrease 105 million tonnes of carbon dioxide by 2030 as outlined in the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).
Later, the Myanmar delegation attended a plenary session on energy cooperation, featuring discussions between Russian President Mr Vladimir Putin and Equatorial Guinea’s President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. The delegation also met with Mr Alexey Likhachev, Head of Rosatom, to explore collaboration in the electricity sector.
On September 27, the Union minister met with representatives from Rosatom’s Renewable Energy, Smart Utilities, and Energy Projects divisions to discuss wind and hydropower initiatives. The delegation concluded their visit with a tour of the Atom Pavilion Museum on September 28.
