People interested in Myanmar culture have noticed Myanmar marionettes, which are renowned worldwide among the marionette industries.
“Although the market is no longer as good as before the COVID-19 pandemic, they are still bought as gifts and for home decoration. Those who love the art of Myanmar’s traditional craft buy them. As gifts or decoration in hotels and offices, marionettes can still attract customers,” said a seller from B.B Queen Handicraft in Mandalay.
Before 2021, the market had about 15 kinds of marionette figures, but they couldn’t fetch a good price because of inadequate wood and rising wood prices, so only human, horse, and elephant figures were sold.
The art of making marionettes in different sizes, with various figures such as elephants, horses, parrots, tigers, crocodiles, and owls, is a beautiful handicraft today. Still, not much is interested in young people.
