The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Ministry, Dr Tin Htut, inspected the ASEAN + 3 reserve rice storage facility in Thanlyin Township, Yangon Region, on the morning of September 22. He assessed the conditions for proper reserve rice storage and maintaining the storage facility’s integrity.

Due to the effects of Cyclone Ragi, heavy rain has been affecting Myanmar since September 9. A sudden influx of water from the mountains and landslides caused floods in 54 townships across nine provinces and regions. Approximately 1/6 of Myanmar’s 330 townships (16 percent) experienced flooding. As of the morning of September 21, 2,149 buildings were completely destroyed, 3,455 buildings were partially damaged, and 13,602 buildings were submerged. In total, 14,627 units were affected, including 546 schools that suffered flood damage.

Additionally, the flood impacted 148,643 people, resulting in 384 fatalities. The disaster also damaged 435 religious buildings and schools, 533 roads and bridges, 2,489 electricity poles, and 99 communication towers, killed 144,998 animals, and destroyed 735,461 acres of rice.

Currently, 1002.71 tons of reserve rice supported by the APTERR program are being distributed to regional states affected by floods. According to Dr. Tin Htut, officials have been instructed to collaborate with relevant departments and organizations to export and distribute the rice to the affected regions as quickly as possible.
