Mandalay Region, Nyaung U Township, No. (3) Ward, Bird Shooting Mountain. At approximately 8:12 PM on September 21st, a 100-year-old school building was engulfed in flames near Bird Gyi Koung Cha School. Inspectors reported that the fire ignited when the school’s priest lit a candle in the cupboard containing scriptures and devotional items.
The school’s priest lit a candle on the cupboard holding the scriptures and holy items and worshipped. Afterwards, while briefly going to Kuti, the entire school building was engulfed in flames from the burning scripture books on the cupboard, which were ignited by the candlelight. When we arrived, the fire was already raging. Since the school is filled with oil, it ignites easily. The flames spread rapidly. Fortunately, there are no casualties,” a Nyaung Oo Township Fire Department member said.
The fire lasted for nearly 30 minutes, destroying a 100-year-old full of oil schoolhouse, an 80-foot-long and 60-foot-wide tin canopy, and a meter box and its contents.
Nyaung U City Police have initiated a case against a 25-year-old school priest at the school for destroying a 100-year-old school building under Section 285 of the Penal Code.
