According to the National-level Committee on Geoparks, Mount Popa National Geopark, Myanmar’s first national-level geopark, is being identified with new geosites to gain recognition as a global geopark.
Because of its exceptional potential, Mount Popa was declared the country’s first national geopark on 6 December 2023.
UNESCO global geoparks require a diverse range of geological sites, and Mount Popa is currently seeking to increase the number of proposed geosites from 15 to 30.
This project will involve different organizations, academic institutions, and research teams. If it succeeds, it will increase international awareness of Myanmar’s rich natural resources and cultural heritage.
