According to the Department of Archaeology and National Museum, plans are underway to establish copyrights for Myanmar ethnic traditional costumes and to develop laws concerning intangible cultural heritage.

Myanmar’s ethnic group’s traditional costumes will be categorized according to their use in daily life and for special occasions. We will also draft laws regarding intangible cultural heritage and copyrights for these conventional costumes.

Myanmar’s National Costume Determination Committee has been established to investigate and verify the origins of the costumes of Myanmar’s main ethnic groups – Mon, Bamar, Rakhine, Shan, Kachin, Kayin, Chin, and Kayah—and ensure accuracy. “The aim is to patent Indigenous groups’ costumes and recognize them as intangible heritage,” said an archaeology and museum official.

In addition, historical documents, field survey records, relevant indigenous literature, and cultural groups will be consulted to ensure the accuracy of traditional costume identification.
