Due to the support of SAC government, the foreign export of agriculture and livestock sector of Myanmar is not declined, Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Tin Htut Oo said at the 44th Meeting of the ASEAN Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry (AMAF) and related meetings held on 26 October.
The 44th Meeting of ASEAN Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry (AMAF), the 22nd ASEAN Plus Three Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry and the 7th ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry hosted by the Lao People’s Democratic Republic was held virtually.
Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Tin Htut Oo and Myanmar delegation together with ministers from ten ASEAN member states participated in the meetings.
At the meeting, Union Minister U Tin Htut Oo said that Myanmar’s economy is based on agriculture, which accounts for 23.7% of the country’s GDP and 35% of the income from foreign exports and 70% of the population in rural areas are engaged in agricultural activities.
Moreover, Myanmar exported 1.9 million tonnes of rice, 1.87 million tonnes of beans and pulses, 2.6 million tonnes of corn, 0.3 million tonnes of sesame and 0.6 million tonnes of marine products. Due to the surplus production of food, the sufficiency of food and nutrition could be fulfilled in the region. Such success is gained through the balanced cooperation of government and private and also for the support of the government.
Myanmar’s foreign export from agriculture and livestock sector was over US$-4739 million via normal trade and more than US$-2476 through border trade, totaling over US$-7.2 billion till the end of August this year, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
