Myanmar filmmakers must adhere to copyright rules for theme songs

16 August 2024

The Myanmar Motion Picture Organization (MMPO) announced that it is now necessary to provide proof of copyright ownership or licensing for any theme songs used in movies or TV series.

It is implementing a new copyright law for theme music in films and TV shows, which requires filmmakers to obtain copyright permission before using theme songs.

MMPO Vice-Chair U Aye Kyu Lay said, “We will implement a new copyright system for theme music On 15 August, which means that any serials, films, commercials or music videos requiring censorship after that date must obtain the necessary copyright permissions for their theme songs beforehand.”

To secure theme song rights for their series or films, producers must contact the Myanmar Music Association (Central).
