Waste-to-consumer item methods to be introduced to schools by YCDC

10 August 2024

According to Dr. Aung Myint Maw, Director of the Urban Environmental Conservation and Sanitation Department under YCDC, the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) has been raising awareness about creating consumer goods from waste at basic education schools.

Dr. Aung Myint Maw explained that students are taught how to sort and discard wet and dry waste at the elementary, middle, and high school levels during the awareness workshop. The goal is to help students progress to the point where they can create consumer items from waste by following these practices. Prizes will be awarded for their efforts after YCDC organize contests. City residents should be taught effective waste management techniques starting from elementary schools.

With discarded water bottles, paper boxes, and plastic bags, students are used to produce consumer goods such as flooring, bags, sandals, and baskets. The YCDC plans to conduct awareness programs at 100 schools per year to teach citizens how to properly manage waste.
