In the first four months of 2024, 339 people were killed across the country due to landmines and explosive items during the ongoing fighting in Myanmar, according to UNICEF, the United Nations children’s aid organization. Landmines and explosive items killed 44 people and injured 295 in the first four months of 2024. Among the 44 people who died, 24 children, 6 women and 14 men, said UNICEF.
In addition, among the areas most affected by landmines and explosive items, Shan State has the highest number of casualties, followed by Sagaing Region. 25 percent of the affected deaths were in Shan State, 19 percent in Sagaing Region, and 12 percent in Bago Region.
According to UNICEF, 43 percent of all deaths in the first four months of 2024 are in Chin, Kachin, Kayah, Magway, Mandalay, Mon, Nay Pyi Taw, Rakhine,Taninthari and Yangon. Since the fighting in Myanmar, the use of landmines by armed organizations has been on the rise, it is reported.
