According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, preparations are underway for Mount Popa National Geopark to be designated as a world geopark. In Myanmar, Mount Popa is considered to be the most promising site for achieving world geopark status.
As a global geopark, Mount Popa National Geopark will not only help to conserve and protect Myanmar’s unique natural heritage, but also promote awareness of the country’s natural resources and cultural heritage around the world.
UNESCO’s World Geopark Programme, initiated in 2001, currently includes 177 geoparks in 46 countries. China, with 39 world geoparks, has the highest number of global geoparks. In Southeast Asia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Malaysia also have world geoparks.
