In the field of liver transplant surgery, Tatmadaw has achieved significant milestones: the 1st successful procedure was performed in 2022 with 2 patients, and the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th procedures involved 9 patients in 2023. The 5th procedure was conducted with 3 patients in 2024.
Now, Tatmadaw is preparing for its 6th surgery, which also has 3 patients. The first day of liver transplant procedure began yesterday at Mingaladon Township’s No.1 Defence Services General Hospital (1,000 beds) at the Special Treatment Centre.
In this operation, Major Aung Naing Oo, from the No.8 Basic Military Training Depot, and his niece, Daw Zin Mar Hlaing, who was the donor, were operated on by the Tatmadaw surgical team and a team of Indian surgeons. The patients are now in the ICU under the care of specialists, paramedics and nurses. They are reported to be in good health.
The liver transplant surgery will continue on 12 and 13 May.
