A warning was issued by the Ministry of Information regarding the prohibition of movies that undermine Myanmar’s cultural values and traditions.
Presently, movies are being distributed through various social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Telegram, Viber and movie applications, through the creation of accounts, pages, groups, and websites.
These online movies don’t have official approval and censorship. Therefore, they are unsuitable for viewing by families because they contain content, that contravene country policies, religious sentiments, ethnic harmony, legal framework, and cultural norms.
According to the law enacted, designating the broadcasting of motion pictures via telecommunications networks as an essential service, individuals found guilty of violating such orders under Section 5 of the Law on Essential Goods and Services could face imprisonment ranging from six months to three years and a fine not exceeding 500,000 kyats.
