20 March 2024
After the promulgation of the conscription law, the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) and the National League for Democracy (NLD) issued a joint statement to oppose such recruitment and signed a public campaign against it. But, only 14,025 people have signed against it in ten days, and there are very few people who have signed against it.
The NLD and NUCC said that Myanmar’s current situation is not a situation where citizens are forced to do military service to protect against foreign threats like other countries, so the NLD and NUCC said that it is a “forced military recruitment operation” and jointly signed a “Community Movement Against Forced Military Recruitment” in 2024 to protest against this process.
Although it was launched on March 10th, as a public movement, the number of people who signed the protest was low, and ten days later, it has not reached 14,100. Myanmar is a country with a large number of internet users. According to Datareportal’s 2023 statistics, there are 23.9 million internet users and 13 million people of military age, while the NLD and NUCC’s public campaign against conscription is less than 1 percent.
