ASEAN is appointing Myanmar as the coordinator of ASEAN’s relations with Russia. It is Brunei’s turn to be the coordinator of relations with ASEAN’s allies for a three-year term from 2024 to 2027, but ASEAN has replaced Brunei with Myanmar.
ASEAN Country Coordinators shall take turns to take overall responsibility in coordinating and promoting the interests of ASEAN in its relations with the relevant Dialogue Partners, regional and international organizations, and institutions.
The appointment as ASEAN Country Coordinator for Russia has already enhanced Myanmar’s peace processes, who hosted Russia’s deputy foreign minister Andrey Rudenko in Naypyidaw, Myanmar’s capital last week, where he met with Senior General Min Aung and Myanmar’s foreign minister and deputy foreign minister.
According to Russia, a central purpose of the visit was to discuss Russia-ASEAN dialogue prospects. While in Myanmar, the Russian delegation also held discussions with Myanmar on expanding their military, economic, and technological cooperation.
