Today, February 24th, at 5:06:16 a.m. Myanmar time, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter scale was measured at a depth of 10 kilometers about 7 miles northwest of Nyaung U Earthquake Station.
Regarding the incident, U Kyaw Min, chief of the Nyaung U Township Fire Brigade, said, “The earthquake was not very strong, so it did not become a very significant situation. There is no damage around the ancient cultural area,” he replied to MT News’ question about the natural disaster.
After the 1975 earthquake in Bagan region, many cultural heritages were damaged, and after the 2016 earthquake, about 65 famous pagodas in Bagan were damaged and some people died.
The Bagan Ancient Civilization Area, which was affected by such natural disasters, has now become a World Heritage Site.
UNESCO is overseeing the conservation, repair and sustainability projects of the Bagan cultural area together with the Department of Archeology and National Museum (Bagan Division).
