The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the incidence of cancer among children in Myanmar is rising, and the number of children diagnosed with cancer each year is between 1,500 and 2,000.
According to WHO, there are only two hospitals in Myanmar to treat children with cancer, Yangon Children’s Hospital and Mandalay Children’s Hospital and it is difficult to treat children with cancer who live in remote areas.
Currently, the number of children diagnosed with cancer in Myanmar is between 700 and 800 each year, and there are about 400 children with cancer who are treated at Yangon Children’s Hospital. In addition, Mandalay Children’s Hospital receives a similar number of patients every year, according to a WHO statement.
According to the WHO, Most of the children who develop cancer experience cancer because of bad social and economic conditions and 15 percent of all children diagnosed with cancer each year are not hospitalized.
According to the WHO, 15 percent of all children suffering from cancer have difficulties going to the hospital due to travel costs for cancer treatment and are unable to go due to financial difficulties.
