U Maung Maung Lay, Chairman of the Irrawaddy Dolphin Conservation Group of the Department of Fisheries (Mandalay Region), reported that nearly 400 domestic and foreign travellers came to witness the local net-fishing tradition assisted by dolphins in the Mandalay-Kyaukmyaung area, the part of the Dolphin Conservation Area of Mandalay Region, during the mid-February.
It is reported that during the low water period of the Ayeyawady River, many visitors to Mandalay-Kyaukmyaung are attracted to the net-fishing practices of fishermen who collaborate with dolphins, which facilitates easier viewing of the net-fishing custom.
Similarly, travellers are reportedly attracted to Ayekyun village in Madaya Township in Mandalay, where community-based tourism (CBT) initiatives are underway, to watch the Irrawaddy River dolphins graze every day.
