In January 2024, more than 540,000 pilgrims from local and foreign visited the Shwedagon Pagoda, which was built and worshiped on the Theinkuttarakon in Yangon, according to the Shwedagon Pagoda Treasurer’s Trustee.
During this period, 122,00 monks, 5597 religious nuns, 234,777 men, 28,4450 women, 3284 male foreigners, and 3,646 female foreigners, totaling 543,954 pilgrims came to Shwedagon Pagoda.
As for the number of pilgrims entering the Shwedagon Pagoda, it is around 2,000 per day on regular business days, and there are more pilgrims on Saturdays, Sundays and major public holidays. The number of foreign pilgrims is also around 150 per day. Most of the foreign pilgrims are Americans, Europeans and Africans, but the majority are Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese.
According to Shwedagon Pagoda Treasurer’s Board of Trustees, from January 1, 2024, pilgrimage hours have been extended from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. so that pilgrims can pay their respects peacefully.
