Son Heung-min’s extra-time free-kick winner helped South Korea beat Australia and send South Korea into the semi-finals of the Asian Cup.
Australia had looked set for victory thanks to Craig Goodwin’s volley from Nathaniel Atkinson’s cross three minutes before the end of the first half. But in the 96th minute of overtime, South Korea won a penalty due to Lewis Miller’s foul on Sang Heung-min. From the penalty, Hwang Hee-chan scored the equalizer for South Korea.
After another 30 minutes of overtime, Sang Hyun-min scored the winning goal through a free kick that gave South Korea a 2-1 win.
Australia was reduced to 10 men with O’Neill sent off by the video assistant referee for a dangerous foul. After winning the Asian Cup in 1960, South Korea has been far away from the championship.
