Sergio Jauregui, 38, died after being shot six times while playing soccer in Santa, Morelos. The former Bolivian defender was shot by the attacker at close range as he stepped off the field to rehydrate at the bench.
Emergency services raced to the scene shortly but could not save Jauregui’s life, who retired from playing in 2015, was allowed to play 13 games for Bolivia and played most of his career in Bolivia.
According to Dario AS, the shooter was waiting on a motorcycle at the side entrance of the stadium. Jáuregui’s death is the subject of an inquiry by the authorities. No suspect has been taken into custody yet.
