TATMADAW performed its very first liver transplant at the special treatment centre of De¬fence Services General Hospital (1000-bed) in Defence Services General Township of Yangon Region yesterday marking the Diamond Jubilee Medical Corps Day which will fall on 1 October.
The liver transplant opera¬tion was conducted by a surgical team led by Brig-Gen Khin Aung Tun, Rector of Defence Servic¬es Medical Academy and Lt-Col Thurein Kyaw Myint, the anaes¬thesia and intensive care unit led by Prof Col Daw Yu Aye Latt and the liver transplant surgical team led by liver transplant sur¬geon Dr Neerav Goyal of Apollo Hospital in New Delhi of India.
The Indian liver transplant surgical team included Dr Neer¬av Goyal and Dr Arun Kumar as surgeons, Dr Sanjeev Aneja and Dr Anupam Raj as anes¬thesiologists, Dr Arvind Jerome Bose as intensive care medic, Mr Krishna Pathivada and Ms Priya Shanthi Lewis as OR nurses and Mr Priyank Uphdayay as special surgical/anaesthesia assistant.
The liver transplant was conducted on Quartermaster Sergeant Aung Chit Win and liver donor Daw Myo Thuzar, his wife.
The surgeons took out the liver from the donor yesterday morning and transplanted it into the patient at noon. It took about 11 hours.
The liver donor and the pa¬tient are in good condition and under the medical treatment of specialists.
Yangon Commander Maj- Gen Nyunt Win Swe, Maj-Gen Ko Ko Lwin, Director of Direc-torate of Medical Services of¬fice of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) and officials of GI and Liver Foundation (Myanmar) watched the liver transplant operation.
