The Rakhine State Heritage Conservation Committee has issued an order to demolish or modify buildings that fail to meet the specifications set by the Heritage Impact Assessment in the Mrauk-U Cultural Heritage Zone.
Under the order, buildings and developments that were constructed in the Mrauk-U Cultural Heritage Zone before the enactment of the Cultural Heritage Protection Law and intrude into heritage sites or cause damage to underground heritage, the environment of monuments or the landscape of ancient sites are required to be modified after conducting a heritage impact assessment. The demolition or modification must be carried out in accordance with the HIA specifications within two months for buildings that are worth less than Ks- 100 million, within six months for buildings that are worth between Ks- 100 million and 500 million, within 12 months for buildings that are worth between Ks- 500 million and Ks- 1 billion, within 15 months for buildings that are worth between Ks- one billion andKs- five billion and within 18 months for buildings that are worth Ks- 5 billion or above.
Buildings or developments that cause damage to ancient heritage, underground heritage, environment of monuments or the landscape of ancient sites are required to be demolished. The demolition must be carried out within three months for buildings that are worth less than Ks- 100 million, within nine months for buildings that are worth between Ks- 100 million and 500 million, within 12 months for buildings that are worth between Ks- 500 million, within 18 months for buildings that are worth between Ks- one billion and Ks- five billion and within 24 months for buildings that are worth Ks- 5 billion or above.
Buildings or developments that are attached to heritage buildings, underground heritage, environment or landscape of heritage sites must be demolished within a designated period that extends up to ten years. Action will be taken against those who fails to abide by the order in accordance with the law.
