A 5.1-magnitude earthquake jolted between Yangon and Bago Myanmar at 8.54 pm on Saturday with no casualties reported, the country’s Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) announced.
The epicenter, with a depth of 10 km, was initially determined to be at 17.23 degrees north latitude and 96.32 degrees east longitude, which is about 12 miles to the southwest of Bago in Bago region.
The earthquake was felt in the country’s commercial hub of Yangon, local residents said.
The earthquake was also strongly felt in a monastery in Hmawbi Township, according to MT news agency.
Moreover, a 3.7-magnitude earthquake also occurred at 5.33 pm today and the epicenter, with a depth of 10 km, was initially determined to be at 17.81 degrees north latitude and 96.34 degrees east longitude, which is about 21 miles to the west of Daik-U, Myanmar.
The Sagaing Fault is a major fault in Myanmar and causes many severe earthquakes. It passes through populated cities of Mandalay, Yamethin, Pyinmana, Nay Pyi Taw, Taungoo and Bago, running for a total length of over 1200 kilometers.
MT continues its investigation whether there are casualties due to the earthquake or not and will report further details.
