U Chan Aye, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar summoned and handed an Aide- Mémoire to Mr. Avelino Fernandes Ximenes Pereira, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste in Yangon on 5 July 2023 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nay Pyi Taw.
Regarding the invitation extended to the representatives of the terrorist group so-called the National Unity Government (NUG) to the inauguration ceremony of Timor- Leste’s 9th Cabinet, which was held on 1 July 2023 in Timor-Leste and their meeting with President of Timor-Leste, the Permanent Secretary conveyed the Myanmar Government’s strong protest against the Government of Timor-Leste’s invitation to the NUG and urged the Timor-Leste Government to refrain from making any forms of contact with those terrorist groups and their representatives.
In the Aide-Mémoire, Myanmar calls upon the Timor-Leste authorities that such an invitation or communication to the said representatives of the terrorist groups could abet terrorism and encourage violence in the country and also hamper the Myanmar Government’s anti-terrorism efforts and infringe international agreements related to combatting terrorism
