More than 230,000 foreign tourists entered Myanmar in 2022 as international airlines resumed flights as of April 2022 and the entry of international visitors are allowed, according to the Central Committee on National Tourism Development meeting (1/2023).
The meeting took place at Jade Hall of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism in Nay Pyi Taw on 21 June and was attended by committee chairman Union Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Soe Htut and officials.
He said since the COVID-19 outbreak has been under control, efforts for development of tourism are being carry out with added momentum. Before the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2019, over 4 million tourists visited Myanmar.
But the country received 900,000 tourists in 2020 and 100,000 in 2021. The international commercial flights have been resumed in April 2022, and the arrival of tourists increased to over 200,000. But the number is less compared to the neighbouring countries.
He pointed out to strive of tourism promotion based on eco-tourism, luxury tourism, beach and adventure tourism and cultural tourism in order to keep abreast with the development momentum of the neighbouring countries. He also stressed the needs to provide smooth process of immigration, special tour package and tax refund as well as to promote tour destination through online platforms.
