Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC) issued a statement No. 8/2023.
It stated that the MNHRC inspected 54 prisons, 38 prison camps, 26 homes for the aged, schools for disabled children and youths training schools from January 2020 to May 2023 under Section 43 and 44 in accordance with the functions and powers conferred on it under the commission law.
During the inspection, the MNHRC sent the recommendations to the relevant departments to scrutinize according to the provision: “Everyone has the right to education” stated in Article 26 of Universal Declaration of Human Right for prisoners who present their wishes that they want to continue learning education.
The Myanmar Examinations Department of the Ministry of Education has announced that the 2023 university matriculation exam results on 9 June, 2023. A total of 161,850 students took the exam in nationwide and of them, 109,851 students passed the exam. So, the nationwide pass rate is 67.87 percent.
Among the 109,851 students who passed the exam, ten prisoners from Insein Central Prison, 29 from Mandalay Central Prison and five from prisons in other regions and states, totaling 44 passed the exam. One passed the exam with 5 distinctions, two with 4 distinctions, 25 with 3 distinctions, seven with 2 distinctions and six with 1 distinction. The MNHRC proud of them and pleased for hearing the pass rate of prisoners who sat the exam is 91.67 percent.
Moreover, the MNHRC will constantly urge to continue the rights to education for prisoners, who passed the university matriculation exam, it is reported.
