Myanmar earned over US$ 544 million from the exports of assorted pulses and bean between April to 2 September in the 2022-2023 fiscal year, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
During the six-month period, about 215,300 tons of green gram worth over US$-172 million were shipped in the maritime trade and another 93,008 tons of green gram worth US$ 65 million were exported through the border trade. Similarly, Myanmar exported about 177,278 tons of black gram worth US$ -150 million and another 6,788 tons of black gram worth US$-6 million via maritime and border trades respectively during the same period.
Myanmar mainly grows paddy, corn, peanut, sesame, sunflower, pulses and bean, cotton and sugarcane while pulses and beans account for 33 percent of its agricultural output, ranking the second place among the crops. Pulses and beans are cultivated on about 20 percent of Myanmar’s total arable land. Black gram, green gram and pigeon makes up about 72 percent of total pulses and been cultivation whiles other pulses and beans including chickpea, soya bean, butter bean and garden pea are also grown in Myanmar.
According to statistics for the 2020-2021 FY, Myanmar exported a total of 2,029,695 tons of pulses and beans worth US$ -1.57 billion through the maritime and border trade. During the period from 1 April to 2 September in the 2022-2023 FY, the country shipped 556,020 tons worth US$-448 million and another 142,137 tons worth US$ 96 million of pulses and beans through the maritime and border trade, totaling 698,193.275 tons worth US$-544.593 million.
