Myanmar has drawn a total of US$-1,230.868 million in foreign direct investment within five-month period from April to August in the 2022-2023 financial year, according to the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration (DICA).
The recipients of FDI inflow include agricultural sector which garnered US$-1 million, manufacturing sector at US$-120.852 million, energy sector at US$-702.403 million, real estate at US$-29 million, services sector at US$-376.068 million, and livestock and fisheries sector at US$-1.545 million, respectively.
But Myanmar received the lowest FDI inflow in first seven-month period in 2022 compared to the same period of past four years (2019 -2022) of the calendar year, according to ISP-Myanmar report.
Myanmar attracted over US$-2.7 billion FDI in first seven months in 2019 and over US$-3.8 billion in the same period of 2020. However, the FDI inflow dropped by more than US$-2 billion this year to US$-1.23 billion (US$-1,230 million) from US$-3.4 billion in first seven months in 2021.
FDI in Myanmar, depressed by the COVID-19 pandemic and political unrest, has fallen. Over US$-4,158 million worth of FDI flowed into Myanmar in 2018-2019 FY, more than US$-4,880 million in 2019-2020 FY, over US$-3,791 million in 2020-2021 FY, over US$-641 million in the past six-month mini-budget period (October 2021- March 2022) and over US$-1,230 million in 2022-2023 FY.
