“We negatively assess the persistent desire of Western countries to use the HRC to politicize the Myanmar issue and give its discussion a confrontational character,” Russian diplomat Igor Sergeyev said in his speech at the HRC session on Monday. “In this regard, we see the task of the world community in helping to resolve the situation in Myanmar without interfering in its internal affairs,” he stressed.
The intention of the current Myanmar authorities to hold parliamentary elections “is a stabilizing factor that enhances the predictability of the country’s political vector,” Sergeyev said. An important prerequisite for national reconciliation “is the ceasefire against armed ethnic groups.” Russia regards as a contribution to stabilization “the government’s steps to amnesty those who participated in unauthorized protests.”
At the same time, the Russian diplomat expressed concern about the line of the radical wing of the opposition, which is undermining the return of life to a peaceful course. The continuation of armed resistance by the so-called “national unity government” to the authorities undermines the normalization of the socio-political situation in Myanmar. “We also consider it extremely dangerous to attempt the international recognition of the self-proclaimed association, which only pushes the extremist forces to continue their use of force,” Sergeyev concluded.
