Myanmar government released 7,012 prisoners under an amnesty to mark the country’s Independence Day which fell 4 January 2023.
SAC government released 23314 local prisoners and 55 foreigners under an amnesty to mark the Union Day which fell on 12 February 2021 for the first time and 23047 local prisoners and 137 foreigners on 17 April 2021 which is Myanmar traditional New Year Day for the second time.
SAC government released 5770 local prisoners to mark Thadingyut festival and six local prisoners and one foreigner on 2 March 2022. 1577 local prisoners and 42 foreigners were released under an amnesty to mark Myanmar New Year on 17 April 2022 and six local prisoners on 28 October.
On 17 October, the government released four foreigner prisoners and 5770 local prisoners and 7012 prisoners under an amnesty to mark Independence Day which fell 4 January 2023.
The latest amnesty includes former minister Thura U Aung Ko, writer U Htin Lin Oo and those jailed for charges related to politics, according to the preliminary news.
Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun said he would like to urge those who were released under the amnesty to take part in building of the State.
