Today, The Union Election Commission confirmed that the 2025 election will be held in December and announced that party formation and coalition must be completed by May 9.
The Election Commission announced today that the general election will be held in December 2025, after Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing announced this to the world during his state-level goodwill visit to Russia and Belarus.
According to the Election Commission, at least 15 people who want to establish a political party are allowed to register with the Union Election Commission after scrutinizing and registering them by the law by Section 3 (a) of the Political Parties Registration Law. Since the 2025 general elections are scheduled to be held in December, the Union Election Commission is required to complete the process of establishing and registering political parties, establish a single party by joining parties before the election, and provide sufficient time for political parties to conduct election-related activities/campaigning activities. Those who want to apply for the right to establish a political party are hereby notified to apply to the Union Election Commission by May 9, 2025, and the election date has been confirmed as next December.
