More than 800 suspected cross-border fraudsters have been arrested by Myanmar and China’s joint police, the Chinese embassy in Yangon said on Monday.Scam networks involving Chinese nationals and other nationalities coerced into lying are growing in Myanmar, and industry analysts say the operations are worth billions.
The two countries conducted the operation in Muse in Shan State (North) in March 2024. During the operation between 28 and 31 March 2024, 352 Chinese (337 males and 15 females) and 486 Myanmar nationals suspected of being online fraudsters living illegally in Muse of Shan State were arrested and action was taken against them in accordance with the law.
The United Nations human rights office said last year, at least 120,000 people in Myanmar were being detained for fraud.
Moreover, Chinese state media reported that Myanmar handed over more than 40,000 people suspected of involvement in cyber fraud to China last year.
